C-can we have a giant movie with a giant guy and a tiny gal where the age difference isn’t drastic and the guy isn’t an ugly ogre?

Please? Can we?

YES PLEASE OH MY G O D

It’s like as if Hollywood has a innate problem with the idea of male giants not being stereotypical brutish-looking monsters.

With both Gigantic AND that Downsizing movie coming out, both being VERY one-sided towards GTS, I find it really disappointing that male GT fans are left out. Yet again. Having GTS in your media isn’t raising the bar like you think it is people. :T

The world is now catering to GTS fans, like I feel as though GT fans are constantly being left out. And the stereotyping of Giant guys as brutish and ugly is seriously tiring.

My giant buddies are all adorable. They don’t deserve that shit, and its like we don’t get equal rep at all in the online community but now its happening in real life too.

It’ll come. It’s only a matter of time.

I had a theory as to why this is. Copypasta’d from my old wordpress blog (which I wrote several years ago, based on an even earlier writing, and is part of a series on macrophilia):

Very insightful survey of cultural representation of giants and what roles they are allowed and not allowed to play in our imagination.  I would very much like to see more.

As unbridgeable gulfs go, the segregation between giants and tinies is pretty severe, on par with gods and mortals.  Vampires and mermaids have better chances of making a go of it with humans than giants do.

To be a giant is to constantly and incontrovertibly project a gross visual assertion that the normal rules don’t apply to you, that you are fundamentally uninhibited.  Other paranormal entities might possess equal or greater potential for social disruption, but even the most well-dressed and charming giant can’t conceal his mass, his reach, his appetite.

If you’re a straight dude, you’re going to know why you like girls in pretty grueling detail.

Sorry for the #NotAllStraightDudes cavil, but while it probably seems at times like hetmale size-kink is monolithic—and there are certainly some dudes who loudly claim that it is—of course it is not.  There are plenty of guys both inside and outside of size fantasy who either reject or never received the grueling explanation of why they are supposed to like girls, of whatever size.

I think this is really what it comes down to as far as visual cues go – a masculine presence* that takes up that much room for any reason other than violence probably has too many stuffy execs (or str8 dudebros) shifting uncomfortably in their seats and thinking “no homo” for reasons that are beyond them.

Of course it’s not! Keep in mind that I wrote this back before the tumblr G/t community existed, and back when Mins was de rigeur for M/f (which, tbh, was sometimes a super boring place to be if you were on the f side of things). However, the porn and erotica scene is still pretty dominated by F/m and F/f, even if the actual demographics are a little closer to parity. (Which, if the macro/micro survey from several months ago is anything to go by, it sadly isn’t.) I’ve still got a little bit of an axe to grind though, I’ll be the first to admit. Being into porn while you’re a not-dude isn’t nearly as fun as it ought to be, across the board.

*Normative masculinity can’t be separated from a rapacious sexuality,
either. Look at the BFG, for instance: he’s definitely a he, but he’s
old, slight, nurturing, and is coded with a lot of other desexualizing, “feminine”
cues, not to mention starkly contrasted with the bigger, “manlier” giants who fulfill the evil beefcake trope; that’s the only reason we got a BFG so easily and the rest is almost impossible to come by unless its by fans, for fans.

Yes, the guy with the biggest dick gets to do what he wants, and everyone in our society reflexively fears what that is.  It’s similar to male homophobia being the fear that other dudes (in this case, a dude with a ten-foot cock) will treat you like you treat women.

Transcending these tropes by expanding the options for both giants and giantesses would be pretty subversive, and the money for decent special effects doesn’t usually go to subversive film makers (save us, Bryan Fuller!).

Bingo!

I actually think superhero movies are changing that – look at Thor and Deadpool and Captain America, et al. They’re not hueg, exactly (though Thor is p big and his movie was verrrry keen on showcasing that), but they’re powerful af and… that’s the point. I like that they’re doing Giant Man, but I still get the sense that his GM persona is going to be portrayed on the silly/campy side for a while until they figure out how to make him not threatening to the average viewer.

@vore-me-down: Of course its sexist (to use the term loosely) – mass media is sexist. While you don’t have to believe that masculinity is toxic (no one here is arguing that anyways), it is the case that some masculinities are, specifically the kinds that operate as a zero sum game.
