H: How would you describe your style? I used to be a real big past-tense snob but I read a fic in present tense last year that blew me away with what it did for pacing and tension so I’m 100% about that shit now. My style is largely… ‘unreliable narrator’ + ‘stream of consciousness’ + ‘aggressively sensate’.
O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters? Mostly neither! I usually start with a scene or kink or theme and build out from there. For Bushwhacked/Body Check, it was all three haha. I got the idea for the fic after I busted my knee on a bush-whacking, waterlogged hike to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska, and had to crabwalk through a quarter-mile of mud to be picked up in a canoe at the edge of the glacial lake. It made me think a lot about the duality of human fragility/resilience in the face of a brutally indifferent wilderness. I also decided that Hound needed a magnum opus fic, and that I needed to sort out my feelings regarding wanting to bang giant robots.
U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much. Well, shoutout to somebody who goes by Scribe on FF.net because she wrote the story that got me into fanfic some 15 years ago – it just so happens to be a great read too. Who else… well tbh the only other person I can think of rn is @ss-shitstorm! I used to be more active in fic communities back in my days on LJ but those are loooong gone and I don’t remember any names anymore.
N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you? Hmmm… I probably want either longfic about the secret rel between Gurren Lagann and Yoko, or some kinda story about a Gundam pilot slowly discovering that their mobile suit is alive and sapient.
D: Is there a song or a playlist to associate with [insert fic]? Every chapter title in B/BC is an obsessively-chosen classic rock song that relates to the mood, pacing, and even length of the chapter. ;A;
