You know how every fandom, no matter how big, no matter how fractured and contentious, has that one thing they can all agree on? Well, Kiss Players being terrible is the one thing the TF fandom agrees on. Except… for the fact that KP has fans. We’re as rare as hell, but we exist.
KP is loathed for having really blatant sexualized imagery, all the while mashing together a very thorough moe aesthetic that makes you feel like you’re looking at sexualized child characters (when they’re all actually over 16, which, depending on the circumstances and region, is the age of consent). Its target demographic was creepy otakus, which only adds to the squick factor, but there are a number of considerations here, some of them being that this was a Japanese-only line, and its toys were high-end and marketed towards adult collectors, among other things. The Kiss Players continuity was comprised of a very small toy line, a few obscure manga releases, and a radio show that can only be found in CDs packaged with the (now very expensive) toys.
Basically, those of us who (aren’t otakus and) appreciate Kiss Players know its got a high squick factor, but it’s near and dear to our shriveled hearts because the giant robot/human relations are canon. Also, it’s got some amazing art, haters be damned.
